Celsius to Fahrenheit: The Easy Way to Convert
Traveling abroad? Cooking a foreign recipe? Here's how to convert temperatures without a calculator.
The world is divided into two teams: Celsius and Fahrenheit. If you travel or cook, you'll eventually need to switch between them. Here is the exact formula and a quick mental trick.
The Exact Formula
To convert Celsius (°C) to Fahrenheit (°F):
$$ °F = (°C \times 1.8) + 32 $$
To convert Fahrenheit (°F) to Celsius (°C):
$$ °C = (°F - 32) \div 1.8 $$
The Mental Trick (Approximation)
If you don't have a calculator, use this simple method to get a close estimate:
Celsius to Fahrenheit
- Double the Celsius number.
- Add 30.
Example: 20°C
- Double it: 40
- Add 30: 70
- Actual Answer: 68°F (Close enough for weather!)
Fahrenheit to Celsius
- Subtract 30.
- Divide by 2.
Example: 80°F
- Subtract 30: 50
- Divide by 2: 25
- Actual Answer: 26.6°C
